Rosanne Wierczorek of Dearborn knows times are tough economically, but she didn’t hesitate to spring $50 for a neighborhood play.

“It’s not like I make a lot of money, but this is for a good cause,” said Wierczorek, who nibbled on some shrimp and spicy chicken fingers while waiting for the main event.

Wierczorek was one of 80 people who purchased tickets for the ‘Gala for Guido’ hosted by the Players Guild of Dearborn April 29. The Guild teamed with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to raise money for pancreatic cancer research in the name of the late mayor of Dearborn, Michael Guido. The evening featured hors d’oeuvres, champagne and wine. Then there was a special performance of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

“This is a labor of love,” said Bob Jones, who directs “Fiddler,” which runs through mid-May. “We love Mayor Guido. He was one of our best people. He always gave back and helped us with fundraising to renovate the building.”

Guido was an honorary lifetime member of the Players Guild, where he appeared on stage in many productions.

“I remember Michael in the 1999 production of ‘Music Man,’” said Jeff Ostrowski, president of the Players Guild. “He played the Mayor of the Town for a benefit, which was fitting. Mike was an entertainer, and that’s what we remember him as.”

Gala for Guido raised $4,000. All gross proceeds will be donated to the Mayor Michael A. Guido Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

“To remember him through this and to give back donations is a labor of love for everybody,” Jones said.
